PURA TIRTA EMPUL
Pura Tirta Empul is one of Bali’s most important Hindu temple’s, and one of it’s most magnificent visual and spiritual experiences. Located in central Bali
in the village of Manukaya, this 1,000 year old monument is built
around, and fed by a spring which serves up holy water year-round.
Towering statues, structures, and manicured landscapes provide for a
remarkable visual experience. For many visitors, a spiritual experience
awaits. A destination for Hindu followers, on any given day you can find
Hindu’s and non-Hindu’s utilizing the Tirta Empul’s pools for ritual
worship and cleansing.
Tirta Empul is divided into three courtyards. The rear of the complex
hosts shrines dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, Braham, Mt. Batur and Indra,
while the middle courtyard contains the bathing pools. Take a dip in the
holy water (it couldn’t hurt!), and partake in the drinking and
collecting of crystal-clear spring water. Sarongs can be rented for a
reasonable fee. The temple offers changing rooms and lockers for those
who wish to partake. For less kinesthetically inclined visitors, the
majestic scenery, legendary history, and mythical significance of Tirta
Empul make for a fantastic day trip.
Tirta Empul is flanked by the Tampaksiring Palace, one of three
Indonesian presidential palaces. Built in 1963 for residential and
retreat purposes, the palace is now a popular tourist destination, and
is used by the current president for hosting guests and conducting
conferences. The closest city to Tirta Empul and Tampaksiring Palace is
Ubud. Depending on the time of day, you can expect a roughly one-hour
cab ride from some of Ubud’s most popular hotels and resorts. Your best
bet for nearby accomodations are Lumbung Sari Cottages, Villa Sati,
Abing Terrace, and the highly recommended Alam Ubud Culture Villas &
Residences.
